The difference between those early experiments and today's deployments is reliability. Current systems add guardrails, state management, error recovery, and human checkpoints at defined decision points. The Infrastructure Problem

Here's the part that gets less attention: the software stack most enterprises run on was not designed for any of this.

Traditional enterprise software is built around transactions. A user clicks something, a function runs, a database record changes, and the system waits for the next human action. State is managed session by session. Error handling means showing the user an error message. There's no concept of a process that runs for minutes or hours, dynamically selects its own tools, retries subtasks, or passes partial results between components while maintaining context across the whole chain.

Agentic workflows break all of those assumptions. They need persistent state that outlasts a single API call. They need orchestration layers that can schedule and coordinate multiple models and tools simultaneously. They need principled error handling that distinguishes between "retry this subtask" and "escalate to a human" and "abort the whole workflow." They need audit trails not just for compliance, but because a system that makes autonomous decisions needs to be inspectable after the fact.

Most existing application frameworks — built for request-response cycles — have none of this. The tooling gap is real. Frameworks like LangChain, LlamaIndex, and Anthropic's own Model Context Protocol (MCP) exist precisely because developers hitting these problems needed new primitives. But the infrastructure is young, and the failure modes of agentic systems are harder to predict than those of conventional software. An agent that misidentifies context, gets stuck in a retry loop, or takes an irreversible action on a misconfigured tool can cause damage that a crashed API endpoint never could.

A Microsoft survey of 500 enterprise decision-makers from early 2026 found that nearly 80% of organizations couldn't share data across teams in ways that made agentic AI work. That's not a model quality problem. That's a plumbing problem — the kind that takes years to fix.

What This Means for the Future of Work

The honest answer is that nobody knows exactly how this plays out, and anyone who claims otherwise is selling something.

What's clear is that autonomous workflows shift which parts of a job require human attention. In the short term, that mostly looks like productivity expansion: the same team can handle more volume, because agents absorb the high-frequency, low-judgment work — sorting leads, drafting first-pass documents, running data checks. MIT Sloan research found that 76% of executives in a global survey now view agentic AI as more like a coworker than a tool. That framing matters: it implies coordination and oversight, not replacement.

The more complex question is what happens at scale. Microsoft's 2025 Work Trend Index describes a scenario where, in the most advanced organizations, "humans set direction for agents that run entire business processes and workflows, checking in as needed." In those cases, a supply chain role might shift from managing logistics directly to supervising the agent system that manages logistics — resolving exceptions, building supplier relationships, and setting the boundaries within which agents operate. That's a real change in the nature of the work, even if the job title stays the same.

There's also a governance question that most organizations haven't seriously confronted. When an agent makes a consequential decision — denying a loan, canceling an order, flagging a user for review — who is accountable? Existing organizational structures assume that a human made the call. Agentic systems distribute decision-making in ways that make that accountability harder to assign. Companies deploying agents at scale will need explicit human-in-the-loop checkpoints not just for safety, but for legal and ethical coherence.

The MIT Sloan research makes a useful structural point: agentic AI is simultaneously a tool to be managed as a technology asset and a coworker to be managed like a team member. Most organizations have frameworks for one or the other. Very few have frameworks for both at once.

The Next Few Years

The trajectory is clear even if the destination isn't. Agents are moving from isolated experiments to embedded infrastructure. The companies that pull ahead won't necessarily be those with the most sophisticated models — they'll be the ones that have sorted out their data foundations, mapped their workflows carefully before unleashing agents on them, and built governance structures that make autonomous action auditable and reversible.
